ASUU NEC summoned an emergency meeting this week after the Federal Government once again failed to meet the Union’s demands. As reported during the week, lecturers in Federal universities were paid half salaries which the ASUU chairman labeled, “crippled” and “amputated” salaries. There have been multiple reports claiming the Minister of Labor and Employment ordered the Accountant General of the Federation to pay lecturers half their salary. The real reason behind this still remains unknown.

ASUU had been on strike for 8 months in a fierce battle with the Federal government to meet their demands. The struggle which could not be settled after a series of meetings between FG and ASUU had to be taken to court for settlement. Last month, the ASUU body voted to call off the strike after the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Court of Appeal’s order for the union to call off the strike.

But as it stands the Federal Government has refused to keep its promises to ASUU which made them call off the strike. In response to this action from the government, ASUU members are already meeting all over the country while ASUU NEC is expected to meet very soon too. It is predicted that another ASUU strike is very close.

As it stands, Gombe University ASUU branch has decided not to release the student results for the 2021/2022 session till further notice as a response to the half salaries paid. Also, lectures and supervision of projects for both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

The University of Jos ASUU branch has also issued a stay-at-home order for its members. Many other ASUU branches across the country have also started boycotting lectures with them. If nothing is done by the Federal Government, there will be a general ASUU strike soon.
