    Of all the tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Universities are one of the most attended. The establishment of universities in Nigeria all started with the University of College Ibadan (UCI) in the year 1948. From then till now, we can say massive and impressive development has occurred, as many universities have been established. 

    There are 170 universities in Nigeria, all suited in different parts of the states. Today, Nigeria can proudly boast of having 79 private universities, 43 federal universities, and 47  state universities.

    Not only is a university beneficial to students, but it is also to society at large. The establishment of a University in any state will foster development. Today, we will love to share with you the top 5 states with the highest number of universities in Nigeria

    5. Kano State

    It is a state in the Northern part of Nigeria, also known as the Centre of Commerce. Kano follows Lagos, and Osun state is the fifth state in Nigeria with the highest number of universities. Kano state has a number of 10 universities. They include:

    4. Osun State

    Osun State, also known as the Land of Virtue, is located in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. Osun has 11 universities. The number of universities used to be ten not until the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila Orangun, was added recently.

    The first university established in Osun is the Ile Ife, which we can say brought Ife and Osun at large to the limelight. 

    The universities in Osun State are as follows: 

    Federal Universities (2): Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Health Sciences, Ila Orangun.

    3. Lagos State

    Lagos State is also located in the southwestern part of Nigeria. It is the primary African and Nigerian financial center and economic hub.

    Lagos State, though it has the smallest land size and is still the most populous in Nigeria, accommodates 11 universities. I’m as surprised as you are; where did they get to space? Well, Lagos state is known for its Spirit of Excellence in all ramifications. It is a visionary state that sets goals and achieves them.     Yes, Lagos has two federal universities, three state universities, and six private universities. They include:

    Federal University(2): National Open University of Nigeria, Lagos, and the University of Lagos.

    State Universities(3): Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and Lagos State University of Education.

    Private Universities(6): include Augustine University, Caleb University, James Hope University, Anchor University, Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences Ijanikin, Lagos, and Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos.

    In various universities in Lagos, the Centre of Excellence brings together peaceful coexistence between different ethnic groups.

    2. Delta State

    Delta state, which was named after the Niger Delta, was formed in the year 1991. It is located in the South-South geopolitical zone in Nigeria. Delta State is also known as The Big Heart. 

    The Big Heart has a total of 13 universities. They Include: 

    Federal Universities(2): Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, and Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State.

    State Universities(4): Delta State University Abraka, Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba, University of Delta, Agbor, and Delta University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.

    Private Universities(7): Edwin Clark University, Kaigbodo, Western Delta University, Oghara, Sports University, Idumuje, Ugboko, Micheal & Cecilia Ibru University, Admiralty University, Ibusa, Margaret Lawrence University, Umunede, and Novena University, Ogume.

    Ogun is one of the 36 States in Nigeria. It is located in the Southwestern part of the country. Ogun state, also known as Gateway State, has the highest number of universities in Nigeria. It has several 15 universities and they Include:

    Federal University(1): The Federal University of Agriculture is the only  in Ogun State. It is established at the state capital of Ogun, which is Abeokuta.

    State Universities(3): Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, and Tai Solarin University of Education Ijebu Ode.
