Since Obafemi Awolowo University released the guidelines for resumption and informed students of virtual class via Google classroom, many are scared of data usage. Students who use a 2GB data subscription for a month are the ones scared the most of this new lecture type. Even those that do mega data plan subscription are still concerned as this virtual class will increase their data plan budget.
However, fret not. IOI has got you covered with information that will help in minimizing data consumption. Below are the following ways to minimize your data on Google classroom;
- Change your speakers and microphone for Google Meet:
On your computer, choose an option:
Before a meeting, go to Meet.
After a meeting starts, click More “”.
Click Settings “”.
Click Audio and then the setting you want to change:
Microphone
Speakers
(Optional) To test your speakers, click Test.
Click Done.
From the web, set up video and audio
- Change your computer’s camera or video quality:
On a computer, you can change the camera used for a meeting. You might also want to decrease the quality of your video if you experience:
Video or audio delays
Poor network connection
Low battery
Limited data available
Other video or audio issues
To change the camera or the video resolution when using Meet on your computer:
In a web browser, open Meet.
Click Settings “”and thenVideo.
Select the setting you want to change:
Camera—Your device
(If your camera is working, to the right of Video, your video feed appears)
Send resolution—The image quality from your device that others see
Receive resolution—The image quality that you see from other participants
Note: You can only change Send resolution and Receive resolution settings when you’re in a video meeting.
Click Done.
Send resolution (maximum)
High definition (720p)—Uses more data, but your camera will send a better quality picture
(available on computers with a quad-core CPU or higher)
Standard definition (360p)—Uses less data, but your camera will send a lower quality picture.
Receive resolution (maximum)
High definition (720p)—Uses more data, but you see a higher quality picture
(available on computers with a quad-core CPU or higher)
Standard definition (360p)—Uses less data, but you see a lower quality picture.
Standard definition (360p), one video at a time—To save more data, the other participants’ thumbnails turn off.
Audio only—To use the least amount of data, you see no video.

- Filter out noise from your video meetings:
To help limit distractions in your video meeting, you can filter out background noise. Meet can remove background noises such as typing or closing a door.
Noise cancellation doesn’t affect audio capture from screen sharing.
Meet filters out noises that don’t sound like voices. It doesn’t filter out voices from TV or people talking at the same time.
If non-speech is important to your meeting, such as playing musical instruments, turn off noise cancellation.
Noise cancellation is off by default, but you can turn it on or off before or during a video meeting.
Before a video meeting
Go to Meetand thenselect a video meeting.
Before you join, on the top right, click More “”and then Settings “”.
Click Audio “”.
Turn on Noise cancellation.
Click Join now.
In a video meeting
On the bottom, click More “”and then Settings “”.
Click Audio “”.
Turn on Noise cancellation.
Tip: To check how much noise is cancelled out, next to your self preview at the top-right corner of your screen, look at the Voice indicator “”. It reflects what others might hear. Blocked sounds that others can’t hear don’t move the indicator.
